How To Integrate The Struggling Learners During Group Works

Group activities is one of the most strategic medium through which the young children learn greatly. Most especially children who are slow in learning.

For the struggling learners, it gives them the opportunity to watch their mates speak and perform. This influences the slow learners subconsciously much more than one can perceive. It challenges them to become more.

Grouping could be achieved either by splitting the class into manageable groups or by pairing the learners accordingly with 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿-𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 formula.

Divide the class into groups and assign each group with a specific task that would require each and everyone contribution. Effective teaching methods give students specific task to complete, not just assignments that keep them engaged in the outcome of the class.

Task such as learners taking turns to explain a particular concept or what they think is a very good one. Encourage members of the group to participate in sharing their ideas and opinions no matter how small, even if off point.

This enables the struggling learners to develop self-esteem and self-confidence. As the slow leaners continue to interact and communicate with other students they get to develop social skills and learn greatly from their stronger counterparts.

In using this strategy, the slow learners are not singled out therefore, they have a stake in making their group ideas work, because his or her pride is on the line, both as a learner and a peer tutor.

An effective teacher or Educationist would Always make sure to pair struggling learners with the brighter ones. This way the stronger students robs off on their struggling peers by teaching them unintentionally.

Normally, the stronger  students  may not want to work with the known weaker student in same team. Nevertheless, it is your responsibility to ensure the team are mixed up regardless of every resistance This ensures that the student develop social skills and inter-personal skills.

Mixing up the students would also make the stronger students to teach weaker ones thereby, reducing the burden on the teacher. Peer tutoring has proven to be one of the most effective ally to teaching objectives in the Classroom. This ensures that anyone being assigned to teach his peers also has the opportunity of being tutored by his peers. This way the learners inspire each other.
